Down syndrome is one of the most common and recognizable of the developmental disabilities. With its growing prevalence in the United States and worldwide, it is a syndrome with which the dentists of today and tomorrow will have to be able to competently and compassionately address. The goal of this presentation is to introduce and characterize the Down syndrome population and present the challenges and opportunities that dentists will face in their care.

Activity Objectives:

  • Understand the role of aging in the Down syndrome population
  • Recognize oral and systemic features common in individuals with Down syndrome
  • Discuss approaches to dental care for individuals with Down syndrome

About the Speaker: Dr. Evan Spivack is currently a professor in the department of pediatric dentistry and leads the Special Care Treatment Center at the Rutgers School of Dental Medicine. A 1991 graduate of the University of Maryland Dental School, Dr. Spivack completed a general practice residency at St. Barnabas Hospital (Bronx, N.Y.) and was senior fellow in special care dentistry at Helen Hayes Hospital (West Haverstraw, N.Y.). Prior to serving at Rutgers for the past 21 years, Dr. Spivack held several positions in New York, including that of faculty at the New York University College of Dentistry and served as director of Special Dental Services at St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center (Paterson, N.J.). Dr. Spivack lectures extensively and has published in the professional and lay literature regarding interprofessional care for those individuals with special needs. He was honored to receive recognition as the Arc of NJ health care professional of the year in 2015.
